(1997)
A number of composers from Lithuania (Antanas Kucinskas, Gintaras Sodeika), Estonia (Jüri Reinvere) and the Netherlands (Cornelis de Bondt, Hanna Kulenty, Micha Hamel) were commissioned to compose a work of around five minutes for speaking voice and piano. The amount of notes sung was to be limited to a small number. The common assignment was to set to music a message from, say, a newspaper, magazine or tabloid written in 1996 or 1997. The project was performed at the former Ysbreker in Amsterdam, the NYYD Festival in Tallinn and the Musica Ficta Festival 1997 in Vilnius.
I chose three points from the government report ‘Een cultuur van verandering – Advies Cultuurnota 1997-2000: Muziek en Muziektheater,’ written by the Dutch Cultural Council. Result: a limping ‘rap’.
