Open mind

Open mind (2017/rev. 2019)

Written for Ralph van Raat.

This less-than-three-minute-long subtle piece for piano has affinity with several of my previous compositions, which also have a certain openness, transparency, and playfulness. A colleague described the score of Open mind as “almost Scarlatti-like.” That did not surprise me, because there is indeed a certain similarity with the eighteenth-century rococo style that championed simplicity, lightness and elegance.

The specific use of the middle pedal creates an echo-like effect. A grand piano with a third pedal is required.
