Commissioned by the Ministry of Culture during my period as student at the Conservatory of Utrecht.
First performance: 6 September 1980 in the Ysbreker in Amsterdam during the International Gaudeamus Music Week by the ASKO-ensemble, conducted by Jurrien Sligter.
During my studies, I learnt a great deal from György Ligeti’s composition of the same title and with the same instrumental set up. He was my great role model.
In future performances the written-out final passage by the timpani serves more as a guide for an improvisation. Its length should be shorter than what is currently in the score.
