(1991)
Commissioned by the Stichting Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst.
Monument for piano was dedicated to my friend George Crumb, whose piano music I have often performed.
Sources of inspiration:
– the second movement of the Hammerklaviersonata by Beethoven
– the day of the coup in Moscow in August 1991
Techniques:
– an octotonic scale with a minor character in which one note “doesn’t fit.”
– small independent systems/melodic cells, derived from the main system.
– inversions and retrogrades.
Commissioned by the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.
Played by the composer.
